Pittsburgh is noted for its abundance of excellent colleges and universities. In addition, the region is also fortunate to have a wealth of wonderful private schools for elementary and secondary education. Following is a list outlining some of our area’s best private schools.
Founded in 1996, Aquinas Academy, located in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, is a college-preparatory school for students in Pre-K through grade 12. The co-ed, independent, private Catholic school is recognized as a leader in education and character formation.
Bishop Canevin High School
Located in the Oakwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Bishop Canevin is a Catholic co-educational private high school. Ninety-eight percent of the students from Bishop Canevin continue on to higher education after graduation.
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School
Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory high school. Continuing the tradition of an exemplary curriculum that began in 1939 on Troy Hill, CWNCHS is moving to Cranberry Township for the start of the 2014-15 school year, and now offers a state-of-the-art facility.
Central Catholic High School
A Catholic, college-preparatory school for boys, Central Catholic is located in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, and has been educating young men since 1927.
Eden Christian Academy
Established in 1983, Eden Christian Academy has grown from 35 students to more than 500 in Pre-K through grade 12 on three campuses. This non-denominational Christian school is endorsed by more than 100 evangelical churches.
The Ellis School
The Ellis School is Pittsburgh’s only age 3 through grade 12 independent school for girls. Founded in 1916 and located in the Shadyside neighborhood of the city, The Ellis School empowers girls through an excellent education.
Holy Family Academy
Holy Family Academy (HFA) is an independent, private, Catholic high school located in Emsworth, Pa. Students participate in a Corporate Work Study Program, where they work one day each week at prestigious companies, gaining valuable skills and real-world, relevant job experience.
The Kiski School
The private, all-male boarding school was founded in 1888. The Kiski School is located in Saltsburg. One hundred percent of Kiski’s students go on to four-year colleges or universities.
The Linsly School
Founded in 1814, The Linsly School is an independent, private, day and boarding school for students in grades 5 through 12. Located in Wheeling, West Virginia, it has a 100 percent college placement record.
Oakland Catholic High School
Oakland Catholic High School is a Christ-centered, Catholic girls high school located in Pittsburgh’s Oakland section. It offers a rigorous curriculum as well as 15 sports and numerous clubs.
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School
OLSH is located in Moon Township. It is a private, Catholic, co-educational, college-preparatory high school. Its mission is to transform each student for a life of Christian leadership, stewardship, and service.
Serra Catholic High School
Serra Catholic is a co-ed, Catholic private high school located in McKeesport. It has been named as one of the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the Nation.
Seton-La Salle Catholic High School
Located in suburban Mt. Lebanon, Seton-LaSalle High School was formed in 1979 when South Hills Catholic High School merged with Elizabeth Seton High School. It is the largest co-educational Catholic high school in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
Sewickley Academy is Pittsburgh’s oldest co-educational, college-preparatory, independent day school. Located in the idyllic community of Sewickley, it enrolls children in grades Pre-K through 12. One hundred percent of its graduates continue their education at either a college or university.
Shady Side Academy
Shady Side Academy was established in 1883 in Pittsburgh’s East End. This nationally acclaimed private, co-education school educates children in Pre-K through 12th grade on three campuses.

A nationally recognized co-educational private school, Winchester Thurston has two campuses: Allison Park, which has grades Pre-K to 5, and Shadyside, which has grades Pre-K through 12. The school is noted for its work with gifted and talented students.
